The Cosy Corner Guide: Build a Beautiful Reading Nook in One Afternoon
Following on from our autumn styling ideas and the launch of our hand-turned lamp bases, here’s a fresh, practical project you can finish today: create a warm reading nook that works morning to night. Think compact footprint, layered light, joyful colour—and a dash of Shadow Bright print magic.
There is nothing I love more in Autumn and Winter than a book, a comfy chair and turning the lamp on.
1) Start with the Small Table
Choose a petite side table (35–45 cm wide) so the space feels intentional, not squeezed. Round tables are forgiving in tight spots and soften straight-lined sofas and armchairs.
Top Tip: If the tabletop is under 25 cm deep, keep accessories minimal so your lamp has room to breathe.
2) Add the Lamp

Top Tip: Keep the bottom of the shade roughly level with your seated eye line. It’s the easiest way to get flattering, non-glary light for reading.
3) Choose a Shade Story
Pattern is where your nook gets personality. A few fool-proof combos:

4) Layer Texture for Autumn Warmth
Texture is what makes a corner feel like a hug.
